17Repay no one evil for evil. Respect what is honorable in the sight of all men. 18If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men. 19Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, “Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.” 20Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in doing so, you will heap coals of fire on his head.” 21Don’t be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

1The Lord GOD’s Spirit is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the humble. He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to those who are bound, 2to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, 3to provide for those who mourn in Zion, to give to them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified.

A prayer you can pray

God, I was hurt, and it still hurts. I give you the pain. When I am ready, help me to forgive, and protect me in the meantime. Heal what is broken in me. Amen.

A next step

Talk to a trusted friend, pastor or counselor. If you need to, set a healthy boundary. Healing takes time, and that is okay.
