Rest for the weary

Today's reading: Matthew 11:25-30

²⁵At that time, Jesus answered, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you hid these things from the wise and understanding, and revealed them to infants. ²⁶Yes, Father, for so it was well-pleasing in your sight. ²⁷All things have been delivered to me by my Father. No one knows the Son, except the Father; neither does anyone know the Father, except the Son and he to whom the Son desires to reveal him. ²⁸“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. ²⁹Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. ³⁰For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Reflection

Many of us are tired from work, from worry, from trying to be good enough, and from carrying things no one else sees. Into that exhaustion Jesus speaks a warm invitation: come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Look at who is inviting. Jesus doesn't tell people to fix themselves first. He says come to me, and he describes himself as gentle and humble in heart. He isn't a demanding boss adding to your load.

He does mention a yoke, a wooden frame that joined two animals so they could pull together. To take his yoke is to walk alongside him and learn from him. He promises that his yoke is easy and his burden light. Rest here means you're no longer pulling alone, and it doesn't mean the end of all effort.

Prayer

Jesus, I'm tired, so please take what I can't carry and teach me to walk beside you.
